Spouse & Partner Visa

For partners of British citizens or settled persons.

GOV.UK says that to apply as a partner, you and your partner both need to be 18 or over. You must be able to prove one of the following:

  • You are in a civil partnership or marriage that is recognised in the UK.
  • You have been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply.
  • You are a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner and will marry or enter into a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of arriving.
  • You have been in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply but you cannot live together, for example because you are working or studying in different places, or it is not accepted in your culture.

  • Financial Requirement: Must meet minimum income thresholds (£29,000+).
  • Relationship: Prove genuine and subsisting relationship.
  • English Language: Must meet A1/A2/B1 level requirements.

Other Family Visas

  • Fiance Visa: To come to the UK to marry within 6 months.
  • Parent Visa: To care for a child who is living in the UK.
  • Adult Dependent Relative: For relatives requiring long-term personal care.

Child Family Visa

GOV.UK says a child can apply for a family visa to join their parent in the UK. For a child born outside the UK, whether they can apply depends on their age and how their parent applied.

  • Living arrangements: The child must live with their parent, unless they are living away from home in full-time education, for example at boarding school or university.
  • Marital status: The child must not be married or in a civil partnership.
  • Under 18, born outside the UK: One of the child's parents must be applying or have applied for a visa or to extend their permission to stay as a partner (and the partner they are joining is the child's other parent), or as a parent who has sole parental responsibility for the child. Otherwise, the child might still be eligible if there are serious reasons to let them come to or stay in the UK and there are plans for their care.
  • 18 or over, born outside the UK: The child can only apply if they have permission to stay in the UK on a family visa which started when they were under 18.

Born in the UK

A child born in the UK gets the same permission to stay as their parent. They can either be added to their parent's next application as a dependant or apply separately.
